YAMA WARASHI DIVIDUAL INDIVIDUAL

Yoshino started her project Yama Warashi in Bristol in 2015. Originally from Japan, and now based in London, Yama Warashi is signed to Prah Recordings and has just released new single 'Dividual Individual'. She explains, 'It’s a song about veganism and the difference between individuals, such as humans, animals, fish, insects, that if you cut into, they die; and dividuals like plants, bacteria and mushrooms that’s cut pieces are able to grow anew'. With funky drums and bass woven with 70s-style synths, the new single sees a modernised, simplified style of Afro-beat meet the best of psychedelic soul. The song then evolves to have this dynamic, kraut energy as the volume and pace of the instruments and vocals are amped-up. The accompanying video documents the farming process of radishes - the close-up shots gaining trippy manipulations as the song progresses, giving the radish a kind of sacred depiction. 'The lyrics are a bit cruel - it's about chopping animals and putting chicks in the blender which actually happens in the farms, but I just wanted to focus on the beauty of nature in this video'. The video is the work of Japanese director, Miki Nakamura. Yama Warashi have forthcoming live dates: The Beacon, Bristol, on November 20th; Cafe OTO, London, on December 19th; and Astral Festival, Strange Brew, Bristol, on May 1st, 2022. -Ellie Rose-Davies
